  • What to expect on your 9 day Botswana Self-Drive Safari:

The Botswana self drive accommodated safari allows you the freedom to travel at your own pace between the lodges – and to experience the country as not many lodge guests get to do.

The Botswana self-drive African safari begins in Maun, Botswana, which is accessible by tarmac road from Johannesburg, Gaborone and Zimbabwe. Travelling from Johannesburg may require an overnight en route. Francistown and Nata have comfortable accommodations.

This safari in Botswana can also be done in reverse from Victoria Falls.

Days 1 & 2: Xugana Island Lodge, Botswana

You will leave your car in safe keeping in Maun and fly into Xugana for two nights at arguably the most beautiful camp in the Okavango. Situated on a large lagoon in the permanent delta Xugana Island Lodge is a place to unwind and let the sounds and scents of the delta reinvigorate you.

    Days 3 & 4: Camp Moremi, Botswana

Fly back to Maun where you will pick up your vehicle and head for Camp Moremi in the Xaxanaka area via the veterinary fence and the south gate of Moremi Game Reserve. After a drive through mopane woodland and riverine forest you will arrive at Camp Moremi on the edge of the permanent delta. Here you will spend two exploring this wildlife haven on game drives and boat excursions.

Days 5 & 6: Savute Safari Lodge, Botswana

Leaving Xaxanaka early you will travel along the Khwai floodplains – roads permitting – until arriving at and crossing the Khwai Bridge. A further section of the Khwai provides for some spectacular wildlife viewing. Entering the Chobe National Park the road soon comes out in the Mababe Depression before arriving in Savuti where you will spend two nights. Savute Safari Lodge is situated on the dry Savuti Channel but a waterhole in front of the camp provides for some dramatic encounters.

Days 7 & 8: Chobe National Park, Botswana

Leaving Savuti you head north past the Gocha Hills and some villages towards the Chobe River where you will spend the next two nights in one of the famous lodges in the area. Boat cruises on the Chobe River and drives in the national park provide for spectacular sightings of the legendary elephant herds and the myriad other species that rely on the waters of the Chobe River.

Day 9: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe or Livingstone, Zambia

From Chobe you can either head to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe or Livingstone, Zambia – or alternatively start making your way back to South Africa. This African safari in Botswana is done from Maun to Vic Falls.
